Key Advantages and Drawbacks

Before the detail, here is the short version of the terms eToro published for the first quarter of 2026. What matters sits in the licences, in the spread the platform quotes, in the overnight charges, in the withdrawal terms, and in what the currency conversion charge takes out of a 500 dollar deposit. Each is taken in turn below, from the broker’s own disclosures rather than from trading activity.

Advantages

  • Licences from three first-tier authorities (FCA, CySEC, ASIC), a level of oversight that few brokers hold at once
  • The CopyTrader feature, which copies the positions of selected traders automatically and is the platform’s signature tool
  • Commission-free trading in real shares on US and European markets
  • A simple, intuitive interface suited to beginners, with full Arabic-language coverage across the website and the platform
  • More than 6,000 tradable instruments, spanning shares, currencies, digital assets, commodities, indices and funds
  • An Islamic account available to clients in the Arab region, with a grace period of 7 days

Drawbacks

  • The spread is above average next to brokers that specialise in forex. The quoted GBPUSD spread reaches 2 pips, roughly double what some competitors publish
  • No support for MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5, so traders accustomed to those platforms will not find their preferred tools here
  • Currency conversion charges are high on accounts not denominated in dollars, a hidden cost that falls on Arabic-speaking traders who fund an account in their local currency
  • A flat withdrawal charge of 5 dollars on every withdrawal from a dollar account
  • Live chat is offered in English only, and Arabic-language support runs through email rather than chat

Company Information

eToro was founded in 2007 by the brothers Yoni and Ronen Assia together with David Ring, initially under the name RetailFX. The founding idea was to open the financial markets to everyone through a social trading platform combining simplicity with transparency. Since then the company has grown into one of the largest social trading platforms in the world.

On the company’s own filings, eToro passed 40 million registered users worldwide, with more than 3.6 million funded active accounts. The head office sits in Tel Aviv, Israel, with operating offices in London, Limassol (Cyprus), Sydney, New York, Berlin and Abu Dhabi.

In May 2025, eToro completed its initial public offering on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker ETOR, at a valuation above 5.6 billion dollars. A public listing means the company falls under the disclosure and financial transparency requirements imposed by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which is a further point in favour of its standing.

Is eToro a legitimate broker? On the public record, yes. eToro is licensed by three of the strictest authorities in the world, listed on the Nasdaq exchange, and has been operating for more than 18 years. Fraudulent operators do not obtain an FCA authorisation in the United Kingdom and are not admitted to major exchanges. Even so, the standing of the firm and the risk of trading itself are two separate questions. Losing money while trading does not on its own mean the firm is dishonest; more often it means the risk was not managed properly. The guide to avoiding scam brokers sets out where a licensed broker and a fraudulent one differ.

eToro has collected several international awards over the years, among them best social trading platform from Global Finance magazine and best mobile trading app from Finance Magnates. It has also taken awards for digital-asset brokerage from several independent rating bodies.

Why Traders Might Choose eToro

Several things make eToro a reasonable fit for particular kinds of trader and investor, especially in the Arab region. They are set out in turn below.

The first and most prominent reason is CopyTrader. This patented feature copies the positions of selected professional traders fully automatically. A trader picks whom to follow and commits an amount to each, 200 dollars being the published minimum, and every position that trader opens is mirrored in proportion. It is useful above all for beginners who want to learn from experienced traders while trading for real. For anyone at the start of a trading journey, watching how experienced traders reach their decisions can be a valuable teaching tool.

The second reason is commission-free trading in real shares. eToro charges no commission to buy or sell US shares such as Apple and Tesla through the platform. That makes it an economical option for long-term investors who buy shares and hold them.

The third reason is the platform’s social dimension. eToro is not only a trading venue but a social network for investors: other traders can be followed, their analysis read, and market discussions joined. The community is an active one, and the volume of Arabic-language material posted by traders in the region has been growing.

The fourth reason is Smart Portfolios. These are ready-made investment portfolios built around a theme or a sector, such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence or digital assets. On the platform’s own description they offer reasonable diversification for an investor who would rather not pick individual shares.

One qualification belongs here: eToro is not the right choice for every trader. Traders who lean on advanced technical analysis and custom indicators may find the platform limited next to the MetaTrader platforms. Active traders placing dozens of trades a day may also be affected by the relatively wide spread.

Licences and Regulation

Every licence eToro holds appears on the official website of the authority that issued it. The table below sets out each entry as published in February 2026:

RegulatorLegal entityLicence numberTierStatutory safeguards
FCA (the Financial Conduct Authority, United Kingdom)eToro (UK) Ltd583263Tier 1Segregated client money under the authority’s client-asset rules
CySEC (the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission)eToro (Europe) Ltd109/10Tier 1ICF scheme, ceiling 20,000 euros
ASIC (the Australian Securities and Investments Commission)eToro AUS Capital Ltd491139Tier 1Client money segregation
GFSC (the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission)eToroX1333BSpecialistDLT licence for digital assets

On the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk, licence number 583263 is listed as active and in force in the name of eToro (UK) Ltd. The CySEC register carries licence 109/10 as valid since 2010. The ASIC licence appears on ASIC Connect as active under number 491139.

Is eToro genuinely licensed? Yes, and independently checkable. Anyone can open the websites of the authorities named above and enter the licence numbers to confirm it. That degree of regulatory transparency is what separates a trustworthy broker from a doubtful one. The guide to licences and regulation in trading explains how to run the check.

In practical terms, holding three licences from authorities ranked in the first tier globally carries several consequences for eToro as a firm. First, client money must sit in bank accounts kept separate from the company’s own operating funds. Second, negative balance protection applies, so an account cannot end up owing more than the amount paid into it. Third, the company is subject to periodic financial audits by independent parties. Fourth, the Cypriot entity participates in the statutory investor compensation scheme (ICF), whose ceiling is set at 20,000 euros.

Most clients in the Arab region are booked with the Cypriot entity eToro (Europe) Ltd, which is licensed by CySEC. That entity therefore falls under the European Union’s MiFID II rules, which cap leverage (1:30 on major currency pairs) and require negative balance protection.

Opening an Account and Verification

As of January 2026, account opening runs entirely online. The registration form takes roughly 10 minutes to complete, and identity verification is stated to take between one and three working days after that.

The first step is registration through the website or the app, using an email address, a Google account or a Facebook account.

The second step is completing the profile and the know-your-customer (KYC) procedures. The platform asks for personal details including full name, date of birth, address and telephone number, and for financial information covering source of income, trading experience and expected investment size. This information is required under anti-money-laundering rules and is standard practice at every licensed broker. The guide to opening a trading account covers the process in more depth.

The third step is uploading the verification documents. The platform asks for an image of a passport or national identity card, together with a recent proof of address such as a utility bill or a bank statement no more than 3 months old. Both are submitted through the platform itself, and approval is stated to follow within one working day.

Once verification is complete the account is fully ready for funding and trading. The platform also allows trading on a demo account carrying 100,000 dollars in virtual funds before verification finishes, which suits anyone who wants to explore the platform before committing money.

One point that matters for Arabic-speaking traders: the registration and verification interface is available in Arabic throughout, which makes the process easier for anyone who does not read English comfortably. The company also accepts identity documents issued by every Arab state.

Account Types

eToro offers a simpler account structure than conventional brokers, which typically run 4 or 5 separate levels. That simplification cuts both ways.

The personal (standard) account

This is the base account every new client receives. The minimum deposit differs by country of residence:

Country or regionMinimum deposit
Most countries (including Egypt, Jordan and Morocco)$50
United Arab Emirates$100
Saudi Arabia$50
Kuwait$1,000
Qatar, Bahrain and Oman$50

The personal account reaches the whole range of more than 6,000 tradable instruments, along with CopyTrader and the smart portfolios. Maximum leverage is 1:30 on major currency pairs under the European ESMA rules.

The professional account (Professional)

Available to clients who meet two of three conditions: a portfolio above 500,000 euros, professional experience in the financial sector, or substantial trading activity (10 large trades in a quarter). The professional account carries higher leverage, up to 1:400, but gives up some of the retail safeguards, among them negative balance protection and eligibility for the compensation scheme.

The Islamic account (no overnight charges)

eToro offers an Islamic account free of overnight (swap) charges to clients resident in Arab and Muslim-majority countries. Applying for one requires a deposit of at least 1,000 dollars.

The Islamic account at eToro works on a grace-period basis. For the first 7 days after a position is opened, no additional charge applies. Once the grace period ends, a daily administration charge begins in place of the conventional overnight fee. That administration charge varies with the instrument and the size of the position.

The Islamic account is available to residents of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria. For a comparison of how Islamic accounts work at different brokers, see the broker reviews index.

The eToro Club programme

Alongside the basic account types, eToro runs a tiered loyalty programme called eToro Club. Membership is set by the balance held. Silver begins at $5,000 and Gold at $10,000, both dollar balances. Platinum begins at $25,000 and Platinum+ at $50,000, on the same dollar scale, and Diamond at $250,000 is the top dollar tier. Each tier adds something, such as lower currency conversion charges, a dedicated account manager and exclusive research, and Diamond members pay no currency conversion charge at all.

Fees and Trading Costs

eToro works on a commission-free model, earning its revenue mainly from the price spread. The spreads it published through the first quarter of 2026 are set out below at different points in the trading day and against three main competitors.

Spreads

Compared at different points in the trading day, the eToro spread is competitive on the major currency pairs but above average on commodities and minor pairs. The table below sets the published figures side by side for February 2026, during active trading hours (the overlap of the European and US sessions):

InstrumenteToroPepperstone (standard)XM (standard)Plus500
EURUSD1.0 pips1.1 pips1.7 pips1.1 pips
GBPUSD2.0 pips1.4 pips2.1 pips1.8 pips
USDJPY1.0 pips1.1 pips1.6 pips1.5 pips
AUDUSD1.0 pips1.2 pips1.8 pips1.2 pips
USDCHF1.5 pips1.4 pips2.1 pips1.7 pips
Gold (XAUUSD)45 cents20 cents25 cents35 cents
Oil (WTI)5 cents3 cents4 cents4 cents

The spread widens noticeably in thin-liquidity periods such as the opening of the Asian session or the run-up to significant economic data. On the platform’s published pricing the EURUSD spread rose to 3 pips around the European interest-rate decision. That behaviour is normal at most brokers, but it shows more plainly at eToro because of the relatively fixed spread model.

Assessment: the eToro spread on the major pairs such as EURUSD and USDJPY is competitive and close to the best a competitor offers. On commodities, and on gold in particular, it is clearly higher. A trader whose focus is gold may find better value on cost elsewhere.

Commissions

eToro charges no separate commission on forex or contract-for-difference trades; the cost of trading sits entirely inside the spread. Trading in real shares, without leverage, carries no commission at all. That simplified model suits beginners who would rather not work through layered costs, though professional traders may prefer the tight-spread-plus-fixed-commission model that brokers such as Pepperstone offer on their Razor accounts.

Overnight Financing (Swaps)

eToro applies an overnight charge (overnight fees) to every contract-for-difference position still open after 21:00 GMT. A triple charge falls on set days of the week: Wednesday for currency pairs and commodities, Friday for most shares, indices and funds. On the published schedule the overnight charges at eToro sit above the sector average, which is worth knowing for anyone who holds positions across several days.

Deposit and Withdrawal Fees

eToro applies a flat withdrawal charge of 5 dollars on every withdrawal from a US dollar account, with a minimum withdrawal of 30 dollars. Euro and pound sterling accounts withdraw free of charge and carry no minimum. On the deposit side eToro charges nothing at all, though a currency conversion charge can apply where the deposit currency differs from the account currency.

Inactivity Fees

eToro applies an inactivity charge of 10 dollars a month where a trader has not signed in to the platform for 12 consecutive months. The charge stops the moment the account is used again. That threshold is more lenient than at some competitors, which begin charging after only 3 or 6 months.

Overall Assessment of Fees

Overall, the eToro fee structure suits long-term investors who buy real shares without leverage. Active forex and commodity traders will find the total cost higher than at specialists such as Pepperstone or IC Markets. The largest hidden cost is the currency conversion charge, which can reach 1.5% for clients outside the upper Club tiers, and that bites on Arabic-speaking traders who fund an account in a local currency.

Desktop Trading Platforms

eToro runs a trading platform of its own straight in the web browser, with nothing to install. An account can therefore be reached from any device with an internet connection.

The interface is clean, orderly and easy to move around. The menus are clear and the charts run smoothly. The platform carries the basic drawing tools and a reasonable set of technical indicators, more than 60 of them. The charting tools cover basic and intermediate technical analysis but do not reach the level of TradingView or MetaTrader for advanced work. For a fuller comparison of trading platforms, see the guide to trading platforms.

The platform’s main strength is its social integration. From a single screen it is possible to see what other traders are trading, read their comments, and copy their positions with one click. The integration is smooth and does not get in the way of trading.

The main drawback is the absence of the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms. Traders accustomed to expert advisors (Expert Advisors), custom indicators and the MQL programming language will not find those tools here. Customisation options are also limited next to the MetaTrader platforms. In October 2025, eToro released public application programming interfaces (Public APIs) giving access to market and portfolio data, though that does not fully make up for advanced automated trading.

The interface is available in Arabic throughout, with right-to-left text support. The Arabic rendering is good and reads naturally across most of the platform, with some technical terms left in English, which is common across trading platforms.

Mobile Trading Apps

eToro publishes an app for both iOS and Android. The description below refers to the release current in February 2026.

CriterioniOSAndroid
App store rating3.8 out of 53.6 out of 5
Number of ratingsAbout 7,700More than 150,000
Arabic interfaceAvailableAvailable
Biometric sign-inFace ID and Touch IDFingerprint

The app covers very nearly the same functions as the web platform. Positions can be opened and closed, traders copied, the portfolio managed, and money deposited and withdrawn, all from the phone. Anyone comparing the leading trading apps will find that eToro brings the whole platform into a single app rather than a cut-down version of it.

The app’s store ratings (3.8 on iOS and 3.6 on Android) sit below those of broker apps such as Plus500 (4.1) or Trading 212 (4.5). The complaints that recur most in the published user reviews are slow loading at times, limited charting tools on small screens, and frequent marketing notifications. The recurring praise is ease of use, CopyTrader on the phone, and instant alerts on market moves.

Available Trading Instruments

eToro lists a wide range of instruments, more than 6,000 of them across several asset classes. The counts published for each class are set out below:

Asset classApproximate numberNotes
SharesMore than 4,500From 20 global exchanges, including selected Saudi and Emirati shares
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs)More than 700Includes a varied range of ETFs
Currencies (forex)49 pairsCovers all the major, minor and exotic pairs
Digital assetsMore than 100Includes Bitcoin, Ethereum and dozens of altcoins
CommoditiesMore than 30Includes gold, silver, oil, natural gas, wheat and others
IndicesMore than 20Includes S&P 500, Nasdaq, DAX, FTSE and others

eToro allows trading in real shares, with actual ownership and no leverage, alongside contracts for difference (CFDs) on the same shares with leverage. That flexibility is useful, because it lets a long-term investor buy real shares while a short-term trader uses leverage. Buying real US shares confers genuine ownership of the share, including entitlement to dividends. For more on the subject, see the guide to share trading.

On digital assets, eToro stands out by allowing the purchase of the underlying coins and not contracts for difference alone, with the option of moving them to an external eToro Money wallet. That puts eToro in a strong competitive position next to conventional forex brokers, which offer contracts for difference on digital assets and nothing more.

The one clear negative is that the number of currency pairs (49 pairs) is lower than at some forex specialists such as Pepperstone (90+ pairs) or Saxo Bank (185+ pairs). That will not affect most traders, whose attention stays on the major and minor pairs.

Order Execution

Order execution is one of the factors that weighs most heavily on an active trader’s results. Execution quality is not independently measured here, so no fill-time figures are given. What the platform does state is that orders on the large US shares such as Apple and Microsoft are routed to the underlying market.

On slippage (Slippage), no figures are given here, because none can be established from a primary source. Slippage is a normal feature of any platform and widens in volatile conditions: a major pair such as EURUSD can fill away from the price shown on screen around a significant data release. The platform publishes no slippage statistics of its own.

The platform supports the following order types: market order (Market Order), pending order (Limit Order), stop-loss (Stop Loss) and take-profit (Take Profit). Advanced options such as OCO orders (one cancels the other) and automatic Trailing Stop orders are not offered, and those are features the MetaTrader brokers do provide.

eToro acts as a market maker (Market Maker) on most contracts for difference, which means it is the counterparty to a client’s trade. The model makes some traders uneasy about conflicts of interest, although the conduct rules of FCA, CySEC and ASIC impose fair-execution standards on the entities they authorise and forbid price manipulation.

Deposit Methods

eToro lists a wide range of deposit methods, Visa cards among them:

Deposit methodProcessing timeDeposit feeMinimum
Credit / debit card (Visa, Mastercard)InstantFree$50
Bank transfer4-7 working daysFree$500
PayPalInstantFree$50
SkrillInstantFree$50
NetellerInstantFree$50
Klarna / SofortInstant to one working dayFree$50

Every deposit is free of charge from eToro’s side. The point worth knowing is that a currency conversion charge applies automatically where the deposit currency differs from the US dollar. That charge runs between 0.5% and 1.5% depending on the trader’s eToro Club tier, and it is a hidden cost for any Arabic-speaking trader funding an account in Saudi riyals, Emirati dirhams or Egyptian pounds.

On local payment routes in the Arab region, eToro does not at present support methods such as Mada or STC Pay in Saudi Arabia, or Fawry in Egypt, directly. Arabic-speaking traders generally use Visa or Mastercard cards issued by their local banks, or an international bank transfer.

Withdrawal Methods

The withdrawal process itself is simple, though not the fastest among competitors. On the published schedule a withdrawal of 200 dollars to a Visa card carries the same flat charge as any other amount, and it is returned to the card the deposit came from.

The basic withdrawal rules at eToro:

ItemValue
Minimum withdrawal$30 for dollar accounts (USD); none for EUR and pound sterling
Withdrawal fee$5 for dollar accounts (USD); free for EUR and pound sterling
Processing time1-3 working days (card) / 3-8 working days (bank transfer)
Withdrawal toThe same method used to deposit (for regulatory reasons)

Can money be withdrawn from eToro? Many Arabic-speaking traders ask that before opening an account, and it is a fair question to ask. Yes, on terms the broker publishes rather than at its discretion. The flat charge and the minimum are the same whatever the size of the request, so a withdrawal of 100 dollars to a Visa card, 200 dollars to PayPal or 300 dollars by bank transfer each cost the same to make. No withdrawal has been placed or timed here, so the processing times in the table above stand unverified.

The complaints that circulate online about “withdrawal problems with eToro” usually trace back to specific and avoidable causes: identity verification not completed before the withdrawal request, an attempt to withdraw by a route other than the one used to deposit (which is barred for anti-money-laundering reasons), or an attempt to withdraw less than the minimum. An account that completes verification and follows the stated rules is unlikely to run into trouble.

Customer Support

eToro published three support channels as of February 2026:

Live chat (in English)

Live chat is offered in English only, which is an obstacle for any Arabic-speaking trader who does not read English comfortably. No target response time is published for the channel, and response speed and reply quality are not assessed here.

Email (available in Arabic)

Written enquiries can be sent to the support desk in Arabic, and the answers come back in Arabic. No target turnaround is published for email, and neither reply speed nor the depth of the answers is assessed here.

The ticket system

There is no direct telephone line for ordinary clients. That channel is reserved for eToro Club members at Platinum level and above. Everyone else relies on chat, email and the self-service help centre.

The self-service help centre on the eToro website is thorough, well organised and available in Arabic. It covers most of the common questions about opening an account, trading, withdrawals and deposits, and answers most routine queries without any need to reach the support desk at all.

Customer support is not a scored category here, because scoring it would need testing that has not been done. What can be stated is the shape of the offering: chat in English, email in Arabic, and no telephone line below the upper loyalty tiers. The weakest point is the limited Arabic cover on live chat, which may change as eToro expands in the Arab region.

Research and Educational Material

The education and research section at eToro is one of the stronger parts of the platform. eToro Academy carries a broad set of educational material, which covers:

Recorded courses covering the basics of trading and investing, from beginner concepts such as “what is a share?” through to more advanced subjects such as portfolio management and reading financial statements. Some of these courses are available in Arabic, although the majority are in English. The platform also runs weekly online seminars (Webinars) led by accredited analysts. For a treatment of financial analysis independent of eToro, see the guide to financial analysis.

On research and analysis, eToro publishes daily and weekly market reports covering both technical and fundamental views. It also provides the ProCharts tool, which allows more advanced technical analysis than the standard chart. The analysis is solid and useful for an intermediate trader, but it does not reach the depth and detail of platforms such as Bloomberg or Refinitiv, which is to be expected given how different the audiences are.

The distinctive educational tool at eToro is learning from the community. Because the platform is a social one, it is possible to see how experienced traders actually trade, read the analysis they publish, and follow the reasoning behind their decisions. That kind of practical learning is not available at most conventional brokers.

Fund Safety and Safeguards

eToro operates several layers of financial safeguard under its regulatory obligations. Each is a requirement placed on the licensed entity rather than a promise made to the reader, and they are set out in turn below.

Client fund segregation: Trader money sits in bank accounts kept separate from the company’s own operating funds. Where a company runs into financial difficulty, which is unlikely for a Nasdaq-listed firm, creditors cannot reach money belonging to clients. Compliance with the requirement is checked through the independent audits the regulators impose.

Negative balance protection: Under the European ESMA rules and the FCA rulebook, an account balance cannot go negative. Even in extreme market conditions, a retail client cannot be asked to pay more than the amount deposited. The obligation applies to every retail account the authorised entities hold.

Investor compensation: The Cypriot entity participates in the statutory investor compensation fund (ICF), a scheme whose ceiling is set at 20,000 euros. Participation is an obligation the regulator places on the authorised entity.

Encryption and technical security: eToro uses SSL encryption for all communications, and two-factor authentication (2FA) can be switched on to protect the account against unauthorised access. It is set up through the Google Authenticator app.

Financial transparency: As a company listed on the Nasdaq exchange since May 2025, eToro is required to publish quarterly and annual accounts audited by independent firms. That level of disclosure goes beyond what most privately held brokerages provide. For more on the subject, see the guide to checking the safety of a broker.

The Verdict

This review carries no headline score of its own. The published rating for eToro is derived from the rating methodology and shown in the summary panel at the top of this page. What the sections above describe is a strong and innovative social trading platform with a handful of weaknesses that deserve weighing, on terms published through the first quarter of 2026.

eToro suits these groups in particular:

Beginners who want to learn from experienced traders through CopyTrader. Long-term investors buying real shares with no commission. Traders who value the social, interactive side of trading. Anyone looking for a platform that is easy to use and carries an Arabic interface. Digital-asset investors who want to buy the underlying coins and not contracts for difference alone.

eToro may not suit these groups:

Professional traders who depend on MetaTrader and expert advisors. Active forex traders who need a very tight spread. Traders who deal heavily in gold, given the relatively wide spread there. Anyone who needs immediate technical help in Arabic over live chat.

The common concerns, addressed:

“Is eToro a scam or a fraud?” No. eToro is licensed by FCA, CySEC and ASIC and listed on the Nasdaq exchange. There is no evidence of fraudulent activity. Losing money while trading does not mean the firm is dishonest; it means trading is a high-risk activity by its nature.

“Can money be withdrawn?” Yes, through the routes the broker publishes. The problems reported online usually come down to identity verification never being completed, rather than to the company’s policy.

“Is eToro halal?” eToro offers an Islamic account free of overnight charges, with a daily administration charge in their place. The final religious ruling rests with the trader after consulting a qualified scholar, but the account is built to fit the basic principles of Islamic finance.

On balance, eToro is a well-regulated and innovative broker offering an unusual experience in social trading. Its strengths sit in the depth of its regulation, the CopyTrader feature and the breadth of its instrument range. Its weaknesses sit in the wider spread on some instruments, the absence of the MetaTrader platforms, and the limited direct support in Arabic. Anyone who wants a full comparison against other brokers can start from the broker reviews index.
